Jesuits @ CES 2009 – HP TX2 :: The ‘iPhone” of Tablet Notebooks

gadgettts asked:

www.thetechstop.net Remember when Steve Jobs said, “nobody wants a touch-screen notebook?” — Or what about Apple’s insistence that a MacTablet is a loser? Well HP, and a few thousand CES attendees would disagree! The TX2 is a cool little laptop that gives multi-touch capabilities to a convertible notebook/tablet.

    5botball,

I totally respect your opinion… I’m not one of the guys who thinks that the iPad will be junk. I think it will sell millions and I will probably get one myself once it hits the 3rd or forth revision.

What most people don’t understand is that this is an entirely new computing device. It’s designed to complement what you’ve already got and open up development for a whole new type of computer user.

In any case… this can only be a good thing for us uberGeeks! :)

oh yeah definitely im not saying it will replace laptops. maybe netbooks. but what I was trying to defend was the overall capabilities of the Ipad. people say it’s junk because it’s just a big iphone etc. they are clearly misguided / misinformed and need to know what it can do. like i said it might be because the UI looks very simple. but for whatever reason, i just wanted to address that.

    5botball,

The iPad CAN replace the netbook… of a year ago.

We’ve now got a whole new crop of “netbook style laptops” that have all the power of a notebook, at the size and price of a netbook. — Just check out my review of the Gateway EC14 series. It’s the size of the Acer One netbook, but packs in more CPU power than most 15″ notebooks AND 8 hours of battery life.

At the last CES, I used an EC14 to edit all of our HD video. I couldn’t do that on an iPad.

    5botball,

You’ve hit the one big sticking point for me in the comment that “I’ve personally experienced w/ both iphone and ipod touch”

The iPad is a larger, faster iPod Touch/iPhone – I don’t mean that as an insult. I like my iPhone. However, I don’t consider it anywhere near the ideal for a content creation device. When I want to work, I pull out my laptop.

Bottom line… the iPad will be cool and many millions will be bought, but it will NOT replace desktops or laptops.

OK but I still see the ipad going into that realm of content creation. there are apps like Brushes and iwork, granted not as complete as a desktop version, BUT is it any less capable than lets say a netbook? IDK I think it can replace the netbook. I have had very bad experiences w/ netbooks. but anyway thats what I think

well looking at the hand full of videos of people using the ipad. PLUS what I’ve personally experienced w/ both iphone and ipod touch, there is no way i can be oblivious to what the ipad’s performance might be like. the ipad will have a much faster possessor to boot. application variety is known because you can use iphone apps w/ the ipad. also there will be specific app made for the ipad, utilizing it’s bigger screen and better cpu. just because the UI looks like the old Palm UI, not the same

The iPad will never replace with a desktop/notebook for one simple reason: STEVE JOBS DOESN’T WANT IT TO.

That’s why he pitched the iPad as he did. He doesn’t want it to eat into Macbook OR iPhone sales. The iPad isn’t designed to be a content creation device (i.e. word processing, photo editing, etc.) but rather a content consumption device.
    .
In other words, the iPad isn’t designed to compete with something like the TX2. (which unlike the iPad, was available LAST YEAR.)

    5botball,

Thanks for your comment. Now I’m no fan of Apple, but I do recognize that there will be value to an iPad approach. However, I’m wondering how you can be so sure of the iPad’s performance, application variety and system capabilities when IT HASN’T EVEN BEEN RELEASED.

To me… that just smells of fanboi.

it looks super lagy. so what if its a full operating system. what constitutes an operating system anyway. the ipad’s applications are almost what you can find on a desktop. however, the ipad’s apps run way smoother (than this device at the very least) sure the UI of the ipad is different but it is still an operating system capable of running great games, internet, video, word, photoediting. guarantee there can be a app for the ipad that can compete with a desktop app. just give it time. simple

jahh, there is the ipad now, but this one is a “real computer” not a toy like the ipad
